The 1940s Wurlitzer jukeboxes, now known as high-quality Wurlitzer Golden Age models, surpassed everything that could be combined in terms of design, glamour, and technical innovation. In 1940 alone, two top models were presented, the 700 and 800 models, and a countertop model 71. Paul Fuller conjured up completely new housing for the 700 model made of solid walnut and fine, piano lacquer polished veneer. A new feature of this model was the door that opened to the front for easier service. A magnificently crafted and nickel-plated speaker grill in Art Deco style, as well as curved side trims in which the framed pilasters made of Italian onyx ensured a unique light diffusion and thus greatly enhanced the appearance. A technical innovation was the motor-drive coin switch, also known as the coin grinder, which from then on distinguished the coins from washers and foreign currencies and guaranteed even more sales. The flap with the viewing window was enlarged, and the title holder for the 24 top hits of 1940 remained behind the window. Nickel-plated keyboard-shaped selection keys were lined up symmetrically under the visible 24-way record changer. The tube amplifier (Mdl 700) had more power than before, the volume was controlled by a key on the back, and highs and lows could be adjusted using an additional control unit, which the 15″ ED loudspeaker confirmed unmistakably.
